Spider-man: Homecoming beats Batman V Superman at Domestic box office

Spider-Man: Homecoming has now earned sufficient cash stateside to pass  Batman v Superman: Dawn of justice for 50th place on all time domestic box office.

It’s been a monumental summer for superheroes at the movies in North America, with Wonder Woman  raking in more than $411 million domestically to become the No. 1 film of the season, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with nearly $390 million in ticket sales.

But Diana Prince and Peter Quill weren’t the only superhero characters making waves with moviegoers in the past few months: Spider-Man: Homecoming, which marked the webslinger’s long-awaited solo movie debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, scaled considerable heights financially, too, and because of it is now in some pretty elite company.


According to Box Office Mojo, the film, starring Tom Holland  as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, has now earned enough to pass BvS at the all time domestic box office.

As of Tuesday, Spider-Man: Homecoming has earned $330.661 million, which pushes it past BvS for the No. 50 slot on the list. Released in 2016, BvS ended its domestic run in theaters with $330.360 million in ticket sales.


Spider-Man: Homecoming still has a bit of catching up to do to pass the Spidey films directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire.

Released in 2007, Spider-Man 3 is No. 46 on the all time domestic list with $336.530 million in ticket sales, while 2004’s Spider-Man 2 is entrenched at No. 33 with a gross of $373.585 million.

Meanwhile, the first film in the series, 2002’s Spider-Man, is at No. 24 on the all time list with $403.706 million in domestic ticket sales.

Depending on how long Sony decides to keep the film in theaters, Spider-Man: Homecoming seems to have a legitimate shot of unseating Spider-Man 3 at the third-highest grossing film in the Spider-Man series. Released on July 7, the film has hung tough in the domestic top 10 since its release, earning $1.8 million last weekend for a ninth place finish.

A lot will have to do with how many Spidey fans will want to see the film again on the big screen before its Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD release next Tuesday, September 26.

No matter the case, Marvel fans will no doubt enjoy the opportunity to reignite the Marvel-DC rivalry as Spider-Man Homecoming kicks BvS out of a prestigious spot at the domestic box office.

It may not last long, however. Powered by the blockbuster momentum of Wonder Woman, Justice League is sure to light a fire both here and abroad come November 17, and the newest Spidey will be in peril of losing its top 50 slot.
