Deadpool Creator Urges Fox Not To Continue Talks With Disney

Rob Liefeld Deadpool's creator has publicly urged 20th Century Fox to stop talking to Disney about a potential sale. While the talks between the two companies are reportedly off for now, the possibility of a deal is not totally dead. The original reports said that Disney would acquire most of 20th Century Fox’s assets, including their movie and TV studios, which own the rights to Marvel properties like X-Men and Fantastic Four.

Another major Marvel asset under the Fox umbrella is Deadpool, with the sequel Deadpool 2 on the way in the summer of 2018. Liefeld clearly sees the massive future potential of the new movie franchise based on his brainchild, especially in light of the big box office success of the first Deadpool (over $783 million worldwide) despite its R rating. He apparently wouldn’t be happy if Disney were to take over for Fox from up above, because he has posted a public plea to keep the sale talks on the shelf.

Liefeld took to his Instagram on Tuesday, asking those at 20th Century Fox to “wait on any further talks until Deadpool 2 opens and does a billion.” The Deadpool creator also threw in X-Force for good measure. He presented his succinct yet pointed post as an open letter of sorts to 20th Century Fox chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch, plus his sons James and Lachlan. Check it out below:

There are obvious business reasons why Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox would be a seismic move, but it could also present some significant creative shifts for Marvel in particular. Disney and Marvel Studios would suddenly hold the filmmaking rights to Deadpool, X-Men, and Fantastic Four movies, which could inject them into the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Liefeld, who has a writing credit on the Deadpool movies for creating the character, isn’t crazy to suggest that Deadpool 2 could reach $1 billion worldwide, considering that the first installment nearly made $800 million itself. The sequel will almost certainly have a big opening weekend and turn a huge profit for 20th Century Fox. He even believes that Deadpool 2 will crush Disney’s Solo: A Star Wars Story at the box office. Any potential deal between Fox and Disney would surely transcend any single movie, but Liefeld has reason to be confident that Deadpool can continue to be a cash cow.

Perhaps Liefeld is concerned that Disney would lighten the content and tone of a property like Deadpool to make the movies more kid-friendly. That’s certainly the case with the PG-13 catalog of the MCU. He may have a legitimate gripe if Disney ultimately wanted to compromise Deadpool’s irreverent, often vulgar nature, but it’s unlikely that a move to Disney and Marvel Studios would prevent Deadpool 2 from enjoying the success that Liefeld is predicting.
