Thor: Ragnarok Beats Logan & Wonder Woman at Int'l Box Office
With Thor: Ragnarok taking a hammer to the rest of the box office, the MCU’s latest blockbuster has already pulled in more money internationally than big hitters like Logan and Wonder Woman.
As the highest-rated Marvel movie since the MCU started back in 2008, it already looked like Ragnarok had the “spark” to keep the Thor series alive a little longer. Fans already knew that Taika Waititi’s movie was ruling the roost for a second week at the box office, but it has now become clear that even in 2017’s superhero-saturated market, Ragnarok will be one of the year’s biggest comic book movies.
According to statistics, Ragnarok has secured $438 million internationally in just three weeks. In comparison, James Mangold’s Logan made an impressive $391 million and Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman lassoed $409 during their international theatrical runs. Domestically, Ragnarok still falls behind its predecessors as the ninth highest-grossing movie of 2017, but it surely won’t be long before the long-haired hero starts moving up the pack toward other MCU favorites like Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
While Ragnarok‘s $650 million worldwide total has already overtaken Logan‘s worldwide net of $616.8 million, the muscular man from Asgard is still a way off Wonder Woman‘s $821.8 million. However, nudging ahead of The Dark World as the Thor franchise’s highest-grossing movie, Waititi and stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Tessa Thompson must be pretty pleased with themselves.
Whether it is Waititi’s lighter touch to the Thor franchise, big-name additions like Cate Blanchett and Jeff Goldblum, or just something a little different from the House of Mouse, Ragnarok clearly has the magic formula to keep its winning streak going for a little longer. Interestingly, Disney also noted that Ragnarok is currently tracking at 12 percent more than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was at this point and 21 percent ahead of Doctor Strange. As the MCU seems to be getting bigger and bigger, surely this is a good sign for next year’s Avengers: Infinity War.
Our latest adventure with the Norse gods may still be nowhere near surpassing Beauty and the Beast domestically, internationally, or worldwide, but Thor: Ragnarok is on track to carry on climbing. Further amping that 2017 is the year of the superhero, both Disney and Warner Bros. have been raking it in with their Marvel and DC movies. Not forgetting that the DC colossus Justice League will hit theaters before the year bows out, it looks to be a bumper year for fans of supes in suits.
